An unusual 19:00 Saturday kick-off in Bromley saw the Eagles and the London City Lionesses play out an eventful 1-1 draw in the sides’ second games of the season.

In summary:

• Crystal Palace kick-started their first home game of the season in strong fashion, with Lizzie Waldie scoring inside the first few minutes. 1-0.
• Lionesses’ Elizabeta Ejupi levels the score. 1-1.

• Palace shot stopper Chloe Morgan keeps the game level with a string of excellent saves.

Siobhan Wilson, off the back of a fine assist in the season-opener, was looking to score herself this time out with an effort in the first couple of minutes, which highlighted the impetus in which manager Dean Davenport had sent out his charges.

A warning from Wilson to the opposing team, but one they did not heed, with Lizzie Waldie heading home her first goal for the club on four minutes.

The visitors did respond, though, and instantly hit the Eagles’ crossbar with a great effort. And this was the beginning of a defensive spell for the Eagles with first Wilson blocking the closing-in Lioness, before Chloe Morgan saved well from a further follow-up.

Morgan was again called into action, this time Elizabeta Ejupi’s curled attempt brought about a magnificent save from Palace’s summer signing.

It looked like Davenport’s side would get to the halfway stage leading, thanks to their defensive ranks, with Annabel Johnson leading by example with several crucial clearances. However, Ejupi did eventually find a way through the Palace rearguard to level proceedings.

The second-half carried on much in the same vein, the Lionesses’ Atlanta Primus was expertly thwarted by Morgan who then continued her excellent spell to block Alli Murphy’s attempt to put the Lionesses in the lead.

A Lionesses corner handed the Eagles their best chance of the second-half, with a poorly executed set-piece resulting in a Palace breakaway with purpose, with the move curtailed due to a foul. From the resulting free-kick from Coral-Jade Haines’ effort was saved well by Shae Yanez.

A late lone charge from last week’s goalscorer, Cherelle Khassal, raised hopes of Palace’s first win of the season late on. However, a draw under the lights at Hayes Lane was a fair result and Davenport’s side remain unbeaten ahead of Blackburn Rovers in two weeks’ time.

With the fixture set to be played at the Vitality Stadium, Crystal Palace will face AFC Bournemouth in Round Two of the Carabao Cup.

The clash will be held midweek on 15th or 16th September. Should Palace progress against the Cherries, Round Three will be the following week – 22nd/23rd – and Round Four follows on 29th/30th. 

The Round Two draw was unseeded and regionalised in northern and southern sections. Round Three is unseeded and teams can play other clubs from the north or south.

If Palace defeat Bournemouth, they will face Manchester City in Round Three. The game will be played at the Etihad stadium.

Jeffrey Schlupp, James McArthur, Martin Kelly and Stephen Henderson have each signed contract extensions with the club, Crystal Palace F.C. are delighted to confirm.

Schlupp has made 97 appearances for Palace since joining the club in January 2017, and said of his extended deal: “Last season was a difficult one at times due to injuries.

“However, I’m delighted to have finished it off with a goal against Spurs, feeling 100% and extending my time with the club. I’m already looking forward to hitting the ground running in a few weeks’ time when the season restarts.”

McArthur, who is entering his seventh season with the south Londoners, commented: “When I arrived here in 2014, I didn’t consider the fact that, six years later, I would be making my 200th appearance for the club as I did against Bournemouth last season. I’m proud of what the club has achieved during my time and I’m delighted to be carrying on here.”

Kelly, who has clocked up 145 appearances for the Eagles since his move from Liverpool, said: “Having lived here for six years, my family are settled in south London and I’m extremely happy at Palace; it’s a close-knit club. I’m proud to have played my part in us establishing eight consecutive seasons in the Premier League, and I’m looking forward to seeing what this squad can achieve this coming season.”

Experienced goalkeeper Henderson has also extended his stay in south London. The shot-stopper, who signed from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2019, said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Dean [Kiely], plus Wayne [Hennessey] and Vicente [Guaita], too; it’s a great group to be part of. I’m delighted to continue my time with Palace, and I’m ready to contribute should I be called upon.”

With BT Sport’s, it has been a big season for Crystal Palace’s history captivating Team of the Eighties documentary to the club staking its claim to being the world’s oldest professional football club.

And now it is time for 56 Palace icons to have their famous time in the red and blue cemented, with the launch of the 200 Club. 

The 200 Club honours former Eagles as far back as 1907 to current day first-teamers in Joel Ward, James McArthur and Wilfried Zaha and to those who have only just recently departed SE25 in Julián Speroni. 

But no matter what decade, century or era these players represented the south Londoners, they all share one thing in common: a minimum of 200 appearances for Crystal Palace Football Club. 

Jim Cannon tops the pile with 660 appearances across the majority of the ’70s and ’80s, whilst Macca is the most recent addition to the 200 Club hall of fame, with the midfielder already finding himself level with Peter Wall’s 208 Palace appearances.

The eighteen-year-old midfielder, Jake Giddings, has signed for Crystal Palace’s Academy on a two-year professional contract.

Giddings most recently played for West Ham United, who he joined at the age of five, and signs for Palace after a short, successful trial period in March.

Having penned his deal in south London, Giddings explained his motivation for joining the Eagles’ Academy:

“My dad’s side of the family are all West Ham, but my mum’s side are from south London. So they’re all Crystal Palace fans.

“Also, the way Shaun Derry, the Under-23s manager, was, the way the strength and conditioning coaches were, the way they worked with me, spoke to me, they really wanted to push me and that was a massive bonus”

Giddings is currently training with the club’s Under-23s.
